MY BODY IS NOT BIG ENOUGH TO CONTAIN ME ("SUNSHINE FACE")
(2021)
ARTIST STATEMENT:
Soft sculptures are not static. A soft sculpture can change invisibility, internally, shifting stuffing, creating an entirely new form through rearranging essential (internal) components. While these changes are usually entirely concealed, my sculpture includes an external “glitter pouch” where you can actually see glitter moving, concentrating, and pooling.
SUNSHINE FACE rests atop a floral loveseat, adorning a hard yellow mask and a fluffy hot pink tutu, surrounded by bright orange papered walls. Her body is stuffed with used and unused tea bags, confetti, tissue paper, heaps of dried lavender, and mounds of flowers I’ve picked.
Constructing SUNSHINE FACE daily for 6 months, I developed an artistic process that is not focused on result, but instead mimics and recalls play. I encourage audience members to sit next to SUNSHINE FACE on the loveseat and physically interact with her.
